10 o’clock on a Saturday night. A UN canteen in the northern reaches of Liberia. Spanish soccer on the TV. Belgian beers on hand. Tuna fish sandwiches on the menu.

A Korean, a Kenyan, an American, a clutch of Pakistani peacekeepers, and… a karaoke machine.

At first I thought nothing could beat the Pakistani officer belting out Madonna’s La Isla Bonita, but a trio of Africans singing We Are the World brought down the house.
