  1. I recognize that this is a tool and not a perscription, and yet. There is a middle ground between unredability and ‘Hemingway’ (who presumably would have shot with a harpoon the person who suggested he maybe have a robot go over his prose.)

There is a middle ground between unredability and ‘Hemingway’ (who presumably would have shot with a harpoon the person who suggested he maybe have a robot go over his prose.) Re-use of the same word or phrase too many times in a paragraph is clunky and droning and makes reading harder, not easier. A sttaccatto list of short sentences with an unvarying active structure is boring and a way to lose meaning. Having a choice of different words and sentence structures – some of which are simpler than others, yes – is useful and adds to clarity and getting accross what you want to say, not detracts from it.

(Admittedly, 44 out of 55 sentences in what I tried it on were scolded red.)

  5. Chris, This is great. For years, I would tell students to write like Hemingway, not Faulkner. I will definitely try this app.
