Greg Mankiw’s argument about university tuition fees ignores everything that everyone who has looked at this issue has been saying for the past 5 years. He says, “But because society over all is now richer, today’s Socrates expects a reasonably high standard of living, and that implies hefty tuition.” In reality, in the US, two-thirds of today’s Socrates are adjuncts being paid just enough to live in poverty. Meanwhile, universities hire more and more administrators, who are better and better paid. Surely that has something to do with rising tuition fees.
