Where’s Waldo Kim Jong?

The BBC is reporting that the following photograph of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il, released earlier this week, may be a fake:

From the above distance, everything looks fine. It’s just Dear Leader, the paragon of health, inspecting the troops as normal. But zoom in, the BBC found, and a few inconsistencies raise red flags:

Maybe North Korea has stolen CNN’s hologram technology?

On a serious note, the inconsistencies in the photograph raise the question of whether Kim is in fact incapacitated, or even dead. The latest speculation is that Chang Sun-Taek, Kim’s brother-in-law, is running the show. But nobody really knows for sure.

  3. Anonymous, it’s not a flip — look at the shadows on Kim’s jacket, and the shoulder straps of the guys on either side of him.

    If you blow up the “original” yourself by 5x, it still looks a little fishy (though it’s hard to tell with all the JPEG compression), but the shadows of the legs are completely different, the guys standing on either side are wearing different uniforms, and the black line is actually faintly visible on Kim’s right, though not his left.

    Chris, I think what you’ve got there at the top is the picture the fake Kim was copied from — the fake is the one (see the BBC story) with the sky behind the banner. Of course the one with the trees may be a fake, too.

  5. “Where’s Kim Jong?” ????

    I don’t know if it is intentional or not, but Kim Jong Il’s last name is Kim and first name is Jong Il.

  6. I was confused for a second, and then I realized that one of them is a flip of the other. I’d guess the inset is a flip in order to more easily highlight the problems, since the banner in the main one appears to be in the correct orientation.

  7. I’m confused. The zoom does not appear to be from the larger picture.

    Evidence: note the left hand of the man to Kim’s right is visible in the wide view, but gone in the zoom.

    Also, the shadow behind Kim’s legs seems to be angled correctly in the wide view, but in the zoom it is different.

    What’s going on?
