much of the advice in the link is commons sense: “buy or study a map of the country or area…. start monitoring the weather”.Sense so rare that unfortunately it needs to be reiterated.
But I’m reminded of advice given by a colleague the first time I came to Tanzania in 96. He said it as another newbie was running up and down corridors ‘downsizing’ the NGO we then worked for. He rolled his eyes, looked at me and said “make no decisions in your first six months. You’ll spend the following eighteen clearing up the mess”. We became friends and I learned he liked to exaggerate for effect. And I’ve never forgotten his advice.
