The exception that proves the rule?

Last week I mentioned the absence of laptops in the cafes and plazas of Toulouse. Not entriely so, said Jeannie, as we walked through the main square the other night. There’s someone right there — the first and only of our stay.

The next day, I arrive at TSE to attend a seminar, by Armin Falk of Bonn. Sure enough, here stood the man behind the rogue laptop.

Apparently his laptopping pays off. See his many interesting behavioral economics papers here.

  1. Chris, about this laptops in cafes thing I have a quick question for you. We both moved to the East coast about the same time from Berkeley and one thing I have noticed is that there is actually less of a laptop-in-cafe culture out here as well. Dunkin’ Donuts replaces Starbucks out here and just doesn’t provide the right atmosphere. I have also found that my students at Wesleyan spend almost no time studying or working at cafes, which was the opposite of what I experienced in California. What is it like at Yale/New Haven? (I realize NYC might be quite different).
