Is college the new high school?

A liberal arts English professor writing in Inside Higher Ed:

After too many years at this job (I am in my mid-40s), I have grown to question higher education in ways that cannot be rectified by a new syllabus, or a sabbatical, or, heaven forbid, a conference roundtable. No, my troubles with this treasured profession are both broad and deep, and they begin with a fervent belief that most of today’s college students, especially those that come to college straight from high school, are unnecessarily coddled. Professors and administrators seek to “nurture” and “engage” and they are doing so at the expense of teaching. The result: a discernable and precipitous decline in the quality of college students. More of them come to campus with dreadful study habits. Too few of them read for pleasure. Too many drink and smoke excessively. They are terribly ill-prepared for four years of hard work, and most dangerously, they do not think that college should be arduous. Instead they perceive college as an overnight recreation center in which they exercise, eat, and in between playing extracurricular sports, they carry books around. If a professor is lucky, the books are being skimmed hours before class.

  2. As an undergraduate student at a liberal arts college, I must respectfully disagree with the author.

My peers and I do our work. We don’t complain (well, maybe only a little bit) when we get C’s instead of the coveted A. We come to class ready to learn and get engaged in the material. We have widely attended lectures on “intellectual” topics. Yes, perhaps we too avoid the 8:30 classes (but I am taking an 8:30 advanced economics class this semester and rarely are there less than 20 students in the 22 student class. No one is ever sleeping).

Perhaps John Smith isn’t teaching at the right college. I have found my intellectual curiosity broadened beyond belief during my time here. Being nurtured by your professors, knowing that they know you on a personal level and care about your ideas, is not a bad thing as the author seems to think. Rather, it is one of the most valuable experiences that I have ever had.

  3. As an undergraduate student, I have to agree entirely. I attend a very prestigious public school, and the majority of students I can’t imagine being the intellectual leaders that we are all said to become. Instead, many of us are anticipating needing graduate school in order to prepare us for ANY career we may want to focus on.

  4. I don’t think anyone is scapegoating their students. Bummer dude, I never would have asked the taxpayers to subsidize my time doing bong hits in college. Seriously!

  5. Funny these comments could easily have been made by a college professor of mine, back in the day, whose name actually is John Smith. It seems to me that “John Smith” imagines there’s good pay in doing just what you’re told. The real lesson of this economic recession is that we’ll have to invent our way out of it. “John Smith” scapegoats his students. If he actually does leave his tenured position, he’ll discover the responsibility is his…bummer dude.

  6. I’ve always thought the secret to college success was finding the balance between getting the endless work done while spending as little time as possible sober.

  7. If one needs a college degree to get even the most basic of jobs, then one will have colleges full of people who are passing time until they can graduate and get a basic job.

  8. I agree. Here in Sweden university is free for all, and there are many universities, but many students I meet seem far behind their peers in Canadian universities, who themselves fit the description above quite well. Free university is a terrific idea, but the universities need to maintain high standards for accepting new students and grading them.

  9. Very good insight. That is why I am skeptical of plans to make university education free for all – unless universities are serious about grading tougher and kicking more people out along the way. It seems that university education has degraded for many into a four year party. It would be almost shameful if taxpayers had to foot the bill for that.
