Pretty soon the answer will be a Malaysian astrophysicist named Mazlan Othman, who’s expected to be appointed as the United Nation’s space ambassador for extraterrestrial contact affairs. That gives her the right to make the first official response to any travelling aliens.
From Wired. Yes, the Pentagon will have no issues with those protocols.
This also brings to mind a Jimmy Fallon quote from the week:
Traffic here in New York City was backed up today because of the U.N. General Assembly’s annual meeting. You could hardly get anywhere or do anything. It was almost like being in the U.N.

FYI (part II): I think this [ http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog/2010/sep/27/un-alien-ambassador-mazlan-othman ] article should go along with UN’s Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa) story.

Thank god they sorted this out now. If they waited until actual alien contact before trying to fill the post then usual enormous time lag in UN hiring procedures would have likely resulted the aliens getting fed up with waiting and deciding it would be quicker just to colonize/destroy the planet/eat and/or kill us all.
