Who censors Google?

Google may remove content if a person or government requests. The top ten government requests by country?

  1. Brazil (291)
  2. Germany (188)
  3. India (142)
  4. United States (123)
  5. South Korea (64)
  6. United Kingdom (59)
  7. Italy (57)
  8. Argentina (42)
  9. Spain (32)
  10. Australia (17)

China’s number is a state secret, so the number is unknown. I think they get an honorary #1.

Then there’s the top ten list of government  requests for user information:

  1. Brazil (3663)
  2. United States (3580)
  3. United Kingdom (1166)
  4. India (1061)
  5. France (846)
  6. Italy (550)
  7. Germany (458)
  8. Spain (324)
  9. Australia (155)
  10. Argentina (98)

The full list (and map) here. Hat tip to White African.

  1. **Actually, I’ve made a serious copy-paste error just now, where the USA took UAE’s population numbers. The number for US should be “15.27.” That should have been the only error, but I’m going to get on with my day without rechecking the whole thing. Apologies.

Revised, in user data requests per million users.
    1 — United Kingdom 112.61
    2 — Brazil 50.86
    3 — France 19.63
    4 — Singapore 18.40
    5 — Italy 18.32
    6 — United States 15.27
    7 — India 13.10
    8 — Portugal 10.05
    9 — Belgium 9.19
    10 — Australia 9.10

  2. I was looking at this data, and it’s worth noting that the picture is different if you take requests for user data per million Internet users. Then the list is:

    1 – United States 1006.18
    2 – United Kingdom 112.61
    3 – Brazil 50.86
    4 – France 19.63
    5 – Singapore 18.40
    6 – Italy 18.32
    7 – India 13.10
    8 – Portugal 10.05
    9 – Belgium 9.19
    10 – Australia 9.10
    from 10 on:
    Germany 7.39
    Israel 5.70
    Switzerland 5.19
    Argentina 4.90
    Netherlands 4.68
    Poland 4.30
    Canada 1.63
    South Korea 1.17
    Japan 0.46

*net population data from http://internetworldstats.com/list2.htm is missing Spain, and of course we’re missing Google’s China data.

  3. I’m too lazy to do it, but it would be interesting to see either a per capita or per internet user statistic on that.
