More sad news out of Kenya

Even if I had time to research and write today, I probably could not improve on Ryan Sheely’s summary of events in Kenya.

Also worth reading is Kenyan Jurist’s discussion of the Attorney General’s statement, and Mental Acrobatics’ discussion of a new civil society initiative.

I will note, however, that CNN reports Raila calling the deaths of civilians in Nairobi “genocide on a grand scale”. More than factually inaccurate, this is inflammatory and worrying. I’d hoped for better from him. Might he begin to make Kibaki look like the better statesman?

More promisingly, The East African Standard reports that Raila has suggested an interim unity government who’s main role would be to prepare for a new presidential election in three months. This strikes me as promising. I wonder, though, is it constitutional?

Perhaps not surprisingly, President Museveni of Uganda was the first to call Kenya’s Kibaki to congratulate him on his victory. Here is a man who has helped nudge his own fair share of elections over the finish line.

In a sad sign, Kenya has been added to the International Crisis Group’s CrisisWatch for 2008.

Looking elsewhere in Africa, Dennis de Tray argues in today’s CGD blog that Nigeria should bring back Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria’s dedicated corruption fighter, who after going after a corrupt crony of the President was reassigned to “training” for a year.
