The merits of the European Union should be judged against the plausible counterfactual scenarios if there wouldn’t have been a European Union, not against some perfect ideal world where European politicians and states never make a mistake.
If you believe institutions are important for fostering peace, awarding the Nobel price to the European Union makes a lot of sense. Don’t expect an institution that governs 500 million people to be perfect.
