What plane seating would look like, laid out on the basis of the U.S. income distribution

As I boarded a flight last night, I tweeted that airline boarding is the new caste system.

It could be worse. Suresh Naidu pointed me to Kieran Healy’s terrific illustration of the Air Gini. Here’s what seating in an Airbus A330-300 would look like if space were proportional to the US income distribution:

If there were more than three classes, I have to imagine the people in the back would be sitting four to a seat.

  2. Umm, talk about a dysfunctional framework and misleading analogy.

We are forgetting that the plane isn’t a given. The plane has to be built prior to each flight, and is built by the passengers. The space given to each passenger is thus a function OF THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO ITS CONSTRUCTION.

Indeed you could, for arguments sake, flip this analogy around and whine about how little the passengers in the back were contributing to the costs and inputs necessary to build the plane. Considering the point of the plane is to travel, they are unfairly traveling on the cheap.
