Today I’m attending a NBER working group on National Security. I’m presenting a review of civil war; everyone else is talking terrorism.

Three of the papers are online, and worth checking out:

• Effie Benmelech, Claude Berrebi and Esteban Klor explain how poor economic conditions and lead to better educated, more deadly suicide terrorists;

• Jonathan Lipow and Peter Berck ask whether monetary policy turned the tide in Iraq ; and

• Three scholars from the Center for Naval Analyses look at the determinants of Marine Corps redeployment
