Travel do’s and don’ts

From the British Foreign Office, via The Guardian:

Don’t:

United Arab Emirates: Kiss – “Public displays of affection are frowned upon, and there have been several arrests for kissing in public. Sex outside marriage is illegal”

Croatia: Drink in charge of a boat. Penalties are heavy

Greece: Moon or use other indecent behaviour. This could result in arrest, heavy fines or imprisonment

Netherlands: Carry or use even soft drugs. Tolerance only exists in designated areas of major cities

St Lucia: Don’t wear camouflage clothing. It’s an offence, even for children

Turkey: Behave inappropriately, insult the Turkish nation or national flag or deface the currency

Do:

Bulgaria: Learn some basic phrases. Most officials and police do not speak English even in tourist areas

Egypt: Dress modestly, especially when visiting traditional areas such as mosques and souqs

France and Portugal: Carry a warning triangle and reflective jacket in all vehicles. It is compulsory

Malaysia: Take care using ATMs. There have been instances of card duplication and skimming

Poland: Be wary in stations and on trains. There is a serious risk of robbery

Spain: Drivers be wary of approaches by bogus police officers, in plain clothes and travelling in unmarked cars

United States: Leave your itinerary with family and friends if visiting southern states during the June to November hurricane season

One Response

  1. I traveled to Poland recently, was in public and used their subway system. No issues whatsoever with pick pockets etc.

It was no different than being in any major US city, or at least NYC.

Just don’t be stupid. Don’t flash cash, don’t put your wallet in your back pocket, don’t put valuables in your backpack, and keep an eye out for those around you. Don’t let people bump into you, be careful when standing in a crowd, especially the subway.
