Tackling corruption gets harder every day

The Vanguard newspaper in Lagos highlights a discouraging trend of Nigerian lawmakers declaring greater personal assets than they currently posses in order to build in a cushion that accounts for corrupt gains while in office. When those asset disclosures are finally reviewed years later, the inflated numbers sadly match reality.

  1. How terrible is it? If I was a corrupt African politican, that’s what I’d do. These people aren’t stupid.

    The article is exactly right, that what’s needed is the process being open, with oversight from civil society so there are different power bases checking each other.

    Otherwise it’s useless anyway.
