A numbers cruncher on the front lines of justice

The Christian Science Monitor interviews human rights statistican Patrick Ball. Patrick is grisily writing the book on mortality surveys, and seeing results in international courts:

The tension started in the witness room. “You could feel the stress rolling off the walls in there,” Patrick Ball remembers. “I can remember realizing that this is why lawyers wear sport coats – you can’t see all the sweat on their arms and back.” He was, you could say, a little nervous to be cross-examined by Slobodan Milosevic.

  1. I did a great interview with Patrick Ball at the Berkman Center conference in Istanbul this week. His intensity is great, and he plays the role bringing a reality-check to many of us perhaps excessive digital optimists
