What I’ve been reading

1. Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, by the late Columbia scholar Manning Marable. Gripping stuff, and a fairly powerful reminder that we are not more than a couple of generation removed from apartheid in America, and the hate that hate produced. For those of us who had only seen the Spike Lee film, a slightly slower-moving but more accurate take.

2. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, by Haruki Murakami. Apparently the “starter” Murakami (along with Kafka on the Shore). Both are excellent.

3. Breaking Bad. This is not actually reading, but TV. More accurately, this would explain why I have not been reading more. But easily the most satisfying show I’ve seen in some time. Slightly predictable, but not always. Highly recommended.
