While running yesterday in Monrovia, I received nearly as many “Chinaman! Chinaman!” and “Nihau! Nihau!” as “Whiteman! Whiteman!”. My colleague Rob received a less coveted “Chingchong!”

How funny! I am Chinese, but when I was in Tunis a couple weeks ago, I got “Eskimo”!
when out for my evening cycle in Dar es Salaam this week, I was not surprised by children calling out “MCHINA!”, But “KOREA!” took me by surprise.
Happens all the time in Addis too.
Indeed. In a small town in Egypt, where most of the foreigners are Chinese, my wife (who doesn’t look in the least bit Chinese) has been asked if she’s Chinese.
