Should I ax my shared items feed?

A few weeks ago I discovered I could tweet the blog posts and news stories I like merely by clicking a button. Previously I’d been “sharing” them through Google Reader. Now I need to pick either Twitter or the Shared Items feed, and I’m leaning towards Twitter.

I thought I’d ask readers before axing anything.

Here’s my thinking: all the tweets get sent to Google Buzz (which, frankly, I still don’t understand), so I think you Shared Items followers can get it through the Buzz. I haven’t a clue how this Buzz business works, though. If anyone cares to enlighten me I’ll be terribly pleased.

  1. Another +1 for Reader. I think feed aggregators have more staying power than twitter or buzz, and are especially more useful as a productivity/ professional tool.

  2. People will generally filter out what they don’t want, so your best bet is always to broadcast everywhere.

Yesterday I took this too far however, when a LinkedIn status reposted itself to Twitter, which was picked up automatically by Buzz and then reposted to Twitter. The result was an endless Twitter to Buzz feedback loop posting: “Buzz by Maurice from Twitter: Buzz by Maurice from Twitter: Buzz by Maurice from Twitter: ……”

These are the perils of cross-syndicated feeds.

  3. Please don’t! Google reader is so much better/easier, and I really don’t use twitter

  4. I find Reader better; mainly because I think it is easier perform searches within old posts – something to not underestimate in the long term.

  5. The advantage of shared items is that I’ll occasionally read something I didn’t know I would like. The disadvantage is I spend more time scrolling past articles I don’t like or reading them before I realize I’m not interested.

The advantage of twitter is that I can process many more link suggestions quickly, reading only those that sound interesting. The disadvantage is that the most interesting articles are often the most difficult to summarize in 140 characters, so I miss some good readings.

If it must be either/or, my vote would be for Twitter; I am busy. But may I propose a compromise? Could you share everyday links on Twitter but also share a few exceptional, hard-to-summarize, or heavily-visual articles on reader? This would play to the advantages of both mediums and would help to optimize my reading time.

  6. It is quite easy to have GR shared items sent automatically to twitter using delivr.it (which works seamlessly, as opposed to twitterfeed, which is notorious for its breakdowns).

  7. PLEASE keep using reader–I can load them onto my mobile device that way and read them all day long because it is an RSS feed. I don’t think buzz has this feature yet!!

  8. reader please, that way it can be set up as a regularly updated RSS feed. not sure if that’s possible with twitter. buzz is downright confusing!

  9. Please don’t kill the Reader! Buzz is a disaster that I’ve already unsubscribed from. Reader is the perfect medium for sharing items — items that I can then sort, archive, and return to.

  10. I’ve been getting your shared items through both Google Buzz and Reader — I prefer the latter, as it is where all other items end up. So, like most others, another vote to continue sharing items through google reader.

  11. another vote for reader (which I use and greatly prefer over buzz or twitter…) and continue to appreciate the info you pass on. thanks.

  12. I don’t have a Twitter account, nor will I ever get one – I have no use for the medium whatsoever. I truly value your Shared Items though and would sorely miss being able to read the entire item you post without having to click through to another page (though I suppose in this case, it’s Reader or bust, so the click-through consideration is irrelevant).

  13. they only go to buzz if you have it linked publicly to your twitter profile. you can change the link to private. then only what’s shared in reader goes to buzz.

if you’re not using buzz, there’s no real reason to have your tweets sent there. i use buzz a lot, twitter too. buzz is nice for longer conversations, and people who want just tweets pretty much just use twitter itself.

so: any services you have on your google profile — if marked “public” — also go to buzz. that includes picasaweb, youtube, lastFM, etc. you should go to your profile and decide which ones, if any, to have there as public.

last thing: google linked buzz to profiles (which i hope they unlink later). deleting buzz entirely also deletes your google profile. i’m not sure if “disable buzz” is the same thing as deleting it. haven’t checked because i use buzz every day.

    hope this helps.

  14. I also follow you in Google Reader for months now and while I could follow you in Buzz, Reader is much better as it provides either beginning of shared article or even whole article in the Reader without need to follow the link.

  15. honestly, I don’t read that many of my friends “shared” items. I also tend to do 2 types of sharing; 1 out to the enlightened(savvy) crowd on twitter & the other to the insular crowd on facebook. I use feedly (feedly.com) to read my RSS feeds & their sharing works in many ways (buzz, shared, FB, twitter, gmail).

  16. One “please don’t” vote — Reader is perfect medium. Google Buzz is too busy / ADD, while Twitter is too short, and forces you to follow a link to get to the full stories.

  17. I prefer to see them in Google Reader, if only because it is easier to search for later. Also, people who are actually interested in things that I share follow me on Google Reader. People on Twitter who follow me are just people who have Twitter *and* know me.
