So you want to be an impact evaluator? A chance.

We’re hiring a field research manager in Uganda, via Innovations for Poverty ActionDean Karlan‘s brainchild, and my new home for field experiments:

IPA is currently seeking a Field Research Manager to work for 6 months on an impact evaluation of an innovative program of economic assistance and social support to the young women and children most severely affected by conflict in northern Uganda. Through a combined effort of program implementers and researchers, this evaluation will assess the overall impact of the program on economic activity, social capital and empowerment – crucial elements in post-conflict recovery.

Furthermore, the evaluation will unpack the contribution of each of the program components, in particular the contribution of group formation and women’s business networks to economic success, and reintegration of women formerly with the armed group. The objective is to identify which of the program components are most cost-effective and scalable, and thereby develop a best-practice program for women in countries and regions making the transition between conflict and recovery.

If you’re interested in a applying generally to these kinds of positions, IPA and the Poverty Action Lab pool their recruitment here. Both are doing precisely the kind of thoughtful, theory-oriented impact evaluations I have blogged about before. And they are looking for a whopping 50+ people in 2009.

This is great pre-PhD training–it’s where I got my start (before PAL was PAL). You will work like a dog, but you will work with the best. And you might even get your own fire-eating survey team.

Update: Please don’t apply by e-mailing me. Apply here. Scroll down to “Field Research Manager – Uganda” for the specific post.
