What you can do in Myanmar

The first international aid supplies are on their way to Myanmar as death toll estimates reach 100,000. Many want to give, but some are understandably uncomfortable about working closely with the reclusive junta running the country. Also, the international agencies are clearly having trouble getting in.

Two close friends of mine run a small community development program for Burmese refugees in Thailand, and sent along this e-mail recently:

Lots of folks have been asking me how to make direct donations for cyclone relief that bypass the Myanmar government. The Burmese Refugee Project does not participate in emergency relief efforts, and we have no formal ties with organizations that do. However, the Buddhist Relief Mission is one that we know to be reputable and recommend.

The New York Times also provides a list of international aid agencies bringing relief to Myanmar if that’s more your style.
