We all get pissed of when asked for bribe. However we differentiate between extortion and thanksgiving. We also differentiate between bribing to get an advantage and saying thank you. Our society and environment is not totally logical and mechanistic. That police man on the road could be from your village and you are aware of his circumstances. I guess the huge difference between Nigeria and other places I’ve been to is that everywhere else you pay bribes, to cops, to custom officiers, to civil servant if you don’t want to go the legal way. In Nigeria, there’s no such thing as the bribe-free but slow legal way of operating.
