Last week I speculated why the Mo Ibrahim prize to retiring African leaders might not actually change the calculus for the majority of African heads of state. I suggested leaders like Yoweri Museveni of Uganda are driven by a vision, and that vision includes themselves. I didn’t think he’d actually say it out loud, however…

I don’t need $5m to quit — Museveni: President Yoweri Museveni has said he does not need the $5m (sh8.5b) award given to African leaders who retire voluntarily. Museveni, on a three-day visit to the US, while meeting Ugandans at Mayflower Hotel in Washington DC, said he would retire after he had accomplished his mission.
