I am also on the verge of recommending de Waal’s recent short history of the war in Darfur. I’ve become a little lost in the number of ethnic groups and the complex of Sudanese politics, however, and so have gone back Douglas Johnson’s Root Causes of Sudan’s Civil Wars to get my bearings. Such is the peril of a short history of something so long and complex.
