My wife and I raise money for a youth organization in northern Uganda. The group’s leader is a friend of ours named Egidio, who as a boy was captured by rebels and underwent the most horrible experiences imaginable. After escaping, Egidio pushed his way through school and started an organization to help other youth, the Northern Uganda Child Returnee Association, or NUCRA.
NUCRA has raised money to send youth to school and start group micro-credit programs. We are helping them start a grinding mill and several women’s savings groups. The photo above is of a women’s group who, prior to assistance, were quarrying rocks–hard and poor-paying labor, performed only by the poorest of the poor. Our assistance is helping them start a rotating savings fund to provide access to more profitable and less onerous income-generating activities.
